( Summary )

Reclaim the Internet transformed Mozilla’s 25th anniversary into a multi-room exhibition in Berlin, inviting visitors to reimagine the digital future. Four immersive environments explored expression, creativity, wonder, and community through interactive installations and collective participation. The phygital experience culminated in the Rise 25 Award Show, celebrating pioneers committed to building an open, inclusive, and secure web for the next generation.

Room 1
Expression

Point of You translated Mozilla’s call for an open, participatory internet into a constantly shifting installation. As a physical metaphor for the digital world, the space drew its content from visitor contributions. Personal images animated the sculptural surfaces and shaped a reactive soundscape, turning the room into an evolving environment defined by self-expression and collective presence.

Reclaim expression: The immersive installation “Point of You” set the stage for Mozilla's “Reclaim the internet” exhibition. Our phygital experience in collaboration with Christine Mayerhofer claimed Mozilla's dedication to empower individuals in shaping the internet and their digital experiences.

The installation of six interconnected polygonal sculptures formed an ever-changing digital landscape, allowing visitors to take ownership by uploading personal images. Utilizing custom software developed in VVVV, 12 projectors, state-of-the-art projection mapping, and reactive spatial soundscapes, the images breathed life into the polygonal sculptures, reshaping the character of the space with each upload. This was a clear sign that everyone has the power to make a difference and champion a more inclusive, responsible internet for all.

Our team developed the concept and designed the experience from the ground up. The sculpture's unique character was shaped and pre-tested in 3D before its construction. The creative coding and projection mapping were realized using VVVV. For the interactive engagement, we set up a comprehensive and secure IT system, along with a corresponding microsite. This enabled visitors to upload their images and become a part of the sculpture. The spatial sound design added an immersive auditory layer to the visually dynamic environment.

Room 2
Inspiration

Space of Impulses, by Wolf Moritz Cramer and Paul Schneider (me), presented the internet as a place of impulses and inspiration. A suspended paper sculpture represented global network nodes, while AI transformed inputs from Point of You together with Mozilla’s principles into printed texts, questions, and poetic fragments. These impulses shaped a generative soundscape and mirrored reflections, sparking moments of inspiration and encouraging visitors to consider the open web as a shared space of creativity and values.

Room 3
Wonder

Stacks, by the Spatial Media Lab Collective, revealed the collaborative dynamics of the open web through light and sound. Sixteen transparent LED panels acted as portals, responding to visitor movements with pulses of light and spatial audio that spread and interfered across the room. Each interaction generated new connections, turning presence into a shared composition. The installation highlighted the intangible yet perceptible complexity of collective exchange online.

Reclaim wonder: For the third installation of Mozilla’s “Reclaim the internet” we collaborated with the art collective @spatialmedialab. Together we created “Stacks” an immersive space that celebrated the hidden beauty of human collaboration in the open internet.

16 transparent LED panels made the visitors become part of the installation and formed portals that created meaningful connections within the space. When the visitors stepped in front of the portals their movement data was turned into a symphony of light impulses and sounds that traveled and across the space. With each human interaction new pulses emerged, interfered, dispersed, and grew while connecting the visitors with the experience.

Making of – Reclaim wonder: "Stacks" showcased the beauty of collaboration and meaningful connections in digital environments. We teamed up with the Spatial Media Lab Collective to create a symphony of spatial art, sound, and cutting-edge technology.

The process began with a detailed 3D room and particle simulation to ensure that the transparent LED panels envelop the space, creating an immersive environment for visitors. Custom wooden frames allowed the panels to be strategically placed throughout the room so that light and sound pulses could travel real distances in real-time, connecting people across the space. The frames were more than structural supports; they also housed speakers that emitted spatial sound and custom IR sensors that tracked interactions within the installation. The reactive soundscape was composed especially for the space and responded to visitor movements. Advanced software such as Ableton and Touch Designer interlinked to orchestrate the whole experience. A connected haze machine added depth and diffusion, interacting with light to enhance the illusion of the panels as windows to another dimension.
